Local authorities (otherwise known as city or county council’s) in Ireland are responsible for the provision of public services and facilities such as housing, planning, roads, environmental protection, fire services etc. 

They are the main providers of social housing support for people who cannot afford their own accommodation. Social housing support includes local authority housing and the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). You must make an application to the local authority if you wish to receive social housing supports. 

Dublin Region Homeless Executive

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive is provided by Dublin City Council as the lead statutory local authority in the response to homelessness in Dublin. It adopts a shared service approach across South Dublin County Council, Fingal County Council and Dún Laoghaire - Rathdown County Council.

Homeless services in the Dublin Region are operated on a shared services basis through the Dublin Region Homeless Executive. The DRHE is provided by Dublin City Council as the lead statutory local authority in the response to homelessness in Dublin and adopts a shared service approach across the 4 Dublin Local Authorities. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council County Homeless Section carry out Homeless Assessments, approve Homeless HAP and have a Placement Service.  The main goal of the Homeless service is to move people into temporary accommodation and onto independent living.

Kildare County Council

If you are homeless or at risk of homelessness, you can contact the Homeless Team at 045 980200 /980320 (during normal working hours) or email customerservice@kildarecoco.ie.  A member of our team will carry out an assessment and if you are deemed homeless, temporary accommodation will be organised. Outreach Homeless Services Clinics held monthly in various locations throughout the county. Dates and locations are advertised on our website, social media channels, local radio and newspapers.

Leitrim County Council

Leitrim local authority deals with the provision of housing support to applicants who have been assessed and deemed eligible for social housing supports.  Eligible applicants are placed on our Housing Waiting List.
