Title: Life after care - evaluation of the CAS for Care Leavers provided by the PMV Trust

Overview:

In order to reduce the number of care leavers entering homelessness, the Irish Government introduced a Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS) for Care Leavers, where Approved Housing Bodies (AHB) acquire residential properties for the most vulnerable care leavers. This research will investigate the effectiveness of the CAS for Care Leavers model in homelessness prevention, and in achieving positive outcomes across key life domains of young people, including health, education, employment, housing stability and social inclusion.

The research will investigate two research questions:

  • What are the experiences of the young individuals accommodated in CAS for Care Leavers properties?
  • How effective has the service been in improving housing and non-housing outcomes for young people?

The research will broaden our understanding of the lives of care leavers accommodated in properties under the umbrella of the Peter McVerry Trust organisation, through examinations of the socio-demographic characteristics of care leavers accommodated under the CAS for Care Leavers scheme, the experiences of care leavers in ageing out of care and progressing to independent living, and service providers’ views of the CAS for Care Leavers accommodation model.
