Sligo County Council

Local authorities (otherwise known as city or county council’s) in Ireland are the main providers of social housing support for people who cannot afford their own accommodation. Social housing support includes local authority housing and the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). You must make an application to the local authority if you wish to receive social housing supports.

We provide a very valuable service to vulnerable people who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless. The service is open to all and carried out in a non-judgmental way - including discharges from Mental Health Unit, Sligo hospital, and Castlerea prison services. We listen, give advice and let people know their options and refer to any relevant services that may be of help. Any Child Protection issues are reported immediately. We use a trauma informed approach in dealing with clients who present as homeless. A homeless assessment is carried out and referrals are made to appropriate services as necessary.

We link in with Focus Ireland for advocacy and support. We provide hostel accommodation for singles and family emergency accommodation. We have winter provision accommodation for singles at risk of rough sleeping. We also provide cold weather packs and sleeping bags should the hostel be at capacity or if someone refuses a hostel bed.
